Women of Graphic Design

Women of Graphic Design is a site dedicated to exhibiting work by women in the graphic design industry. It celebrates the contribution and influence of female designers around the world from the 20th century to present day.
Women of Graphic Design was started in 2013 by Tori Hinn at the Rhode Island School of Design as a degree project, after discovering that despite 71% of the graphic design department are women, only 6% of the designers that students were learning about are women.

This gender imbalance is not just limited to curricula; it also extends to institutions. There were only four women in the school where I studied graphic design: myself, two fellow students and the school administrator. Each member of staff, guest speaker and lecturer was male. While classes did not focus on the teachings of historical or influential graphic designers, the ones I was taught about were all men.

Fortunately the design institutions of present day boast a healthy number of both genders that produce some amazing work, however more attention needs to be paid to female designers who help shaped, and continue to shape the industry.
Women of Graphic Design encourages this shift in thinking by showcasing quality design in an outlet for reference, resource, inspiration and discussion. It demonstrates that women are capable of producing a high standard of design on par with their male peers, colleagues, mentors, employers and educators, and are also capable of running studios and successful businesses.
